SERMON RECAP
In Mark 4, Jesus teaches a powerful truth: it’s possible to hear the voice of God and still not truly hear Him. Through the parable of the sower, Jesus reveals that the issue isn’t God’s willingness to speak—it’s the condition of our hearts. Some hearts are hardened, some shallow, some crowded, and some open. Only the heart that receives God’s word with humility and obedience experiences real transformation. The invitation is clear: don’t just listen—respond.
Jesus goes on to show the power of His word. Like light, it illuminates and transforms. Like a seed, it grows steadily over time. Like a mustard seed, even the smallest response can lead to extraordinary impact. Ultimately, hearing God requires surrender. In the storm, the disciples realized they didn’t just need teaching; they needed a Savior. When Jesus speaks, even the wind and waves obey. Jesus still speaks today and He transforms our hearts so that we can hear and respond.
SCRIPTURE
Mark 4:1–41, 2 Timothy 3:16–17
HOW TO USE THIS DISCUSSION GUIDE
As you lead the discussion, we follow a discipleship framework that helps move us from learning to transformation:
Head → Heart → Hands → Share → Check-In
Leader Reminder: There are multiple questions in each section. Leaders should prepare ahead of time and use discernment to choose the questions that best serve their group. The goal of this discussion is not just conversation but transformation. Encourage participation, honesty, and practical obedience.
ICE BREAKER
- What’s one time you “heard” someone but didn’t really listen? What happened?
- What voices or influences tend to fill your attention the most during the week?
- When you need direction or clarity, where do you usually go first?
HEAD
What does the scripture show?
- In the parable of the sower (Mark 4:1–20), how do people receive the Word of God? What does Jesus say these responses reveal about the human heart?
- In the next set of parables (Mark 4:21–34), how does Jesus describe the power of the Word of God? What do these images show us about how God’s Kingdom works?
- In Mark 4:35–41, how do the disciples try to handle the storm? What does Jesus reveal about who He is?
HEART
What do we believe?
- Which “soil” do you most identify with right now—hard, shallow, crowded, or receptive? What do you think is shaping that condition in your life?
- Where have you seen the power of God’s Word at work in your life? Where might God be inviting you to more fully trust and practice His Word in your current circumstances?
- Do you tend to approach Jesus more as a teacher or as a Savior who has authority over every storm? How does that shape your trust and response to Him?
HANDS
Practice Together in Community

- What is one area of your life where you need to stop trying to “handle the storm” on your own and trust Jesus?
- What do you need from the group right now—prayer, encouragement, wisdom, or accountability?
