What is a community group?

COMMUNITY GROUPSwhere the rest of church happens.

At Vox Church, we believe real life transformation happens not only in the larger Sunday gathering, but in smaller, consistent communities where we live out our faith together. This mirrors the early church in Acts 2:42–47, where believers met both in the temple and house to house, breaking bread, sharing life, and growing in their devotion to Jesus.

Community Groups are a primary space where discipleship happens—where we don’t just hear the Word, but practice it (Matthew 7:24, James 1:22). As new creations in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), we need regular rhythms that help us remember who we are, encourage one another, and stay on mission.

That’s why our vision is simple:
Practicing Life in Christ Together on Mission.
These groups are how we bring the church to our neighborhoods, workplaces, and cities.
By prioritizing authentic relationships, shared meals, and spiritual growth, we believe God will continue to transform New England—one community at a time.

Vox Community Groups follow a seasonal rhythm to foster intentional relationships with space for rest and renewal:

  • Fall Semester: September – November
  • Winter Semester: January – March
  • Spring Semester: April – June
  • Summer: We pause our weekly meeting rhythm and encourage fun, community-building gatherings and creative ways to show the love of Jesus through outreach opportunities.

Community Groups are weekly or bi-weekly gatherings of 5–20 people that meet for 90 minutes or less on various days and times, usually in a group member’s home or a nearby location.

Instead of organizing our groups by life stage or shared interests, we center them around geographical location.

This approach fosters deeper, more meaningful relationships within your own community. We believe Proximity Provides Opportunity, so there's something uniquely powerful about sharing life with those nearby —whether you're a student, a seasoned adult, a young professional, married/single, or anywhere in between.

Community Groups are "where the rest of church happens".

Sign-ups happen at the beginning of each semester, so be sure to check in and get connected!

Before You Attend: Communicating with Group Leaders

Initial Contact

Once you sign up, a group leader will reach out via text or email to welcome you and share group details (meeting time, location, format, etc.).

How to Communicate Back

  • Respond promptly to confirm you're coming.
  • Have a question? Ask! Leaders love helping newcomers feel at ease.
  • Running late or can’t make it? Just shoot your leader a quick text to keep communication open.

Hospitality: What to Expect in the Group Environment

  • Come As You Are—Most groups are relaxed and casual. Dress comfortably and feel free to be yourself.
  • Food & Drink—Many groups offer snacks or drinks. You may be invited to contribute as relationships grow.
  • A Warm Welcome—You'll be greeted and included—without being put on the spot. The space is safe, welcoming, and designed for connection.

Clear Expectations for Participation

1. Embrace the Awkwardness

Starting something new can feel weird—and that’s okay. Everyone has been the “new person.” Lean in, stay open, and give it time.

2. Engage in Group Discussions

Community Groups are about conversation, not lectures. Share your thoughts when ready and listen well to others.

3. Be Open to Growth

You might be encouraged to reflect or rethink. That’s a good thing. Community is where spiritual and personal growth happen.

4. Respect Confidentiality

What’s shared in the group stays in the group. Trust builds a safe space for honest, vulnerable conversations.

5. Commit to Consistency

Regular attendance helps relationships deepen. If you can’t make it, just let your leader know.

6. Contribute to the Group

Your voice, your questions, and your presence matter. The group is stronger because you’re part of it.

Extra Tips for First-Time Participants

  • Dress Casual – No need to dress up. Be comfortable.
  • Bring a Friend – Coming with someone you know can ease nerves.
  • Be Real – Your authentic self is welcome here.
  • Tech Options – Ask your leader if there's a Zoom or virtual option if you're traveling or can't attend in person.
